INSTITUTIONAL INTRADAY TECHNICAL DESK NOTE | XAU/USD LIVE MONDAY SESSION & FOMC WEEK PLAYBOOK
1. Key Technical Levels
Intraday levels derived from the 1-hour and 30-minute charts, the European session range ($3,978.19 to $4,004.08), and the exact live spot price of $3,985.24 (down $10.39, down 0.26% on the day).
2. Trading Bias
Intraday bias: Bearish. Exactly as outlined in the Sunday pre-open playbook, an early Asian session attempt to reclaim the $4,000 handle stalled at $4,004.08, printing a sharp upper-wick rejection candle on both the 1-hour and 30-minute charts. Sellers immediately stepped back in to push XAU/USD down to a Monday low of $3,978.19, just $2.31 above Friday's $3,975.88 capitulation floor, before stabilizing near $3,985.24. Value acceptance below $3,995.63 keeps sellers firmly in control.
On the 1-hour and 30-minute charts, both the 20-period EMA (around $3,994.00 on 1H, around $3,990.00 on 30m) and the 50-period EMA (around $4,011.00 on 1H, around $3,998.00 on 30m) are sloping downward in clean bearish alignment, and price remains suppressed below both moving averages across both timeframes.
The 1-hour Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains weak near 33, while the MACD histogram continues to print negative bars beneath the zero line, and intraday technical indicators across 30-minute, 1-hour, and daily horizons unanimously register a Strong Sell rating.
The intraday bearish bias holds while price trades below R1 ($4,004.08). A sustained 1-hour close above $4,004.08 neutralizes immediate selling pressure, while reclaiming R2 ($4,011.50) invalidates the immediate breakdown structure and opens a recovery test toward $4,034.00.
1H

Early Monday rejection at $4,004.08 (R1), retest of $3,978.19 near S1 ($3,975.88), and live spot at $3,985.24.
30m

Failed breakout above $4,000 followed by sustained bearish compression under the 20-EMA and 50-EMA.
3. Macro & Geopolitical Analysis
Markets enter the pivotal October 27-28 FOMC meeting week with the CME FedWatch Tool pricing a 90.6% probability of the Federal Reserve holding rates at 3.75% to 4.00% and a 9.4% probability of a 25 bps hike. However, with money markets pricing high odds of further tightening by December due to sticky 3.7% headline CPI, institutional desks remain reluctant to bid non-yielding gold ahead of Wednesday's statement.
On Monday morning, the US 10-year Treasury note yield eased 2 basis points to 4.98%, hovering just beneath Friday's 5.00% milestone. Simultaneously, the US Dollar Index (DXY) edged down 0.20% to 101.61. Notably, gold's inability to rally despite minor Monday pullbacks in both the 10-year yield and DXY underscores heavy underlying institutional supply.
After surging to six-month highs last week, crude oil prices eased on Monday morning as traders booked profits. WTI crude declined 2.01% to $101.11 per barrel (still up 2.99% over the past 7 days), while Brent crude pulled back modestly from its $116.93 high. While tactical profit-taking cooled energy prices today, US-Iran naval friction around the Strait of Hormuz keeps geopolitical risk elevated.
4. News of the Day & Impact Outcome
Monday's Asian session opened at $3,995.63 and briefly probed above the $4,000 figure to reach $4,004.08 before encountering heavy institutional selling. Even with WTI crude pulling back 2.01% to $101.11 and the 10-year Treasury yield easing 2 bps to 4.98%, bullion slipped to $3,978.19 and remains pinned near $3,985.24 as traders de-risk ahead of today's US Treasury auctions and this week's FOMC meeting.
Upcoming catalysts today include the US Chicago Fed National Activity Index for September at 08:30 ET (previous reading -0.04), the US Dallas Fed Manufacturing Business Index for October at 10:30 ET (previous reading 9.80), 3-month and 6-month Treasury bill auctions at 11:30 ET (previous yields 4.095% and 4.22%), and the 2-year Treasury note auction at 13:00 ET (previous 4.787%), a key gauge of front-end institutional rate demand ahead of the FOMC meeting.
On the bullish side, a sustained breakout and 30-minute candle close above Monday's high at $4,004.08 (R1) would target $4,011.50 (R2), with extended short-covering momentum toward $4,034.00 (R3), on weak Chicago or Dallas Fed activity prints coupled with strong demand at the 13:00 ET 2-year note auction pushing the 10-year yield down toward 4.90%.
On the bearish side, a decisive breakdown and 15-minute close //fxallhub.com/below the $3,975.88 double-bottom floor (S1) would target $3,955.00 (S2), with extended selling pressure toward the $3,930.00 macro support (S3), on resilient US regional manufacturing data or a weak 2-year note auction tail sending the 10-year Treasury yield back above 5.00%.
