XM Forex Broker Review Pros & Cons, Fees, Safety and Ratings

XM has served traders since 2009 and now lists 1,400+ instruments from a $5 deposit. We checked its spreads, regulation, account types, bonuses and withdrawals to see where it is strong, where it falls short, and who it actually suits.

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage.

XM review summary and rating

XM is one of the most widely used forex and CFD brokers in the world. It combines a very low entry point, the full MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 suite, a well-built mobile app with copy trading, and customer support in around 30 languages. Its main trade-offs are an offshore structure for most non-EU clients, no cTrader, and fees on standard accounts that are fair rather than the cheapest available.

Our overall score of 8.3 out of 10 is the average of six categories we test for every broker on Fxdailyinfo. Support and tools pull the score up; account conditions and trust pull it down slightly, mainly because protection depends heavily on which XM entity you are onboarded with.

What is XM? Company overview

XM is the retail brand of Trading Point Holdings Ltd, a group founded in 2009 and headquartered in Limassol, Cyprus. It started as a European forex broker and has grown into a multi-entity group with offices and licenses across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and offshore financial centres. Recent independent reviews put its client base at more than 20 million registered users in over 190 countries.

The broker runs a market-maker model for most retail accounts, which means it usually takes the other side of your trade in-house. For most traders this is not a problem in itself, as long as execution is fast and spreads are honest. XM publishes an execution policy and states that the large majority of orders fill in under a second with no re-quotes.

Is XM safe? Regulation and fund protection

Trust score 7.0 / 10

XM is a legitimate, long-running broker, not a scam. It holds licences from one top-tier European regulator (CySEC), strong regional regulators in Dubai and South Africa, and several offshore regulators. The important point for you as a trader is that your protection depends on the entity you sign up with, and that is decided by your country of residence, not by your choice.

How XM protects client funds

  • Segregated accounts: client money is held separately from company funds at all entities.
  • Negative balance protection: you cannot lose more than your account balance.
  • Margin close-out: positions start closing near 50% margin level and are auto-closed at a 20% stop-out on offshore entities.
  • Investor compensation: only EU clients under CySEC are covered by the Investor Compensation Fund, up to €20,000. This covers broker failure, not trading losses.

Watch for clone sites. Regulators including ASIC and the FCA have warned about fake websites copying XM's name and branding. Always open your account through the official XM domain or a trusted partner link, and check the licence number in your client agreement.

XM's record is not spotless. In 2013 CySEC fined the company €5,000 for breaches related to client-fund rules. Since then there have been no major enforcement actions, and the group has expanded its licences, including a UAE Securities and Commodities Authority Category 5 licence in 2025. Note that this UAE licence covers promotion only; UAE clients' accounts are actually held with the Mauritius entity.

Because Trading Point Holdings is privately owned and not listed on a stock exchange, it publishes less financial information than listed rivals such as IG or Plus500. That is the main reason our trust score sits at 7 rather than higher.

XM fees and spreads

Cost rating 8.0 / 10

XM builds its fees mostly into the spread. Standard and Micro accounts are commission-free with wider spreads, Ultra Low accounts narrow those spreads without adding commission, and the Zero account offers raw spreads plus a fixed commission. For most retail traders the Ultra Low account is the best value; active scalpers will usually prefer Zero.

Spreads are variable and can widen during news releases, the daily rollover and low-liquidity hours. In our checks, spreads on EUR/USD and gold were competitive during the London and New York sessions, while exotics widened noticeably at night.

XM does not offer PAMM or MAM accounts for money managers, and there is no dedicated professional account with lower margin requirements.

XM bonuses and promotions

Promotions are one of the main reasons traders on Fxdailyinfo look at XM. Bonuses are offered only through XM Global and other non-EU entities; clients under CySEC and DFSA do not get them because of local rules. Offers change often, so treat the figures below as a guide and always read the current terms.

Key bonus rules to know

  • Bonuses are for new clients only and require full identity verification.
  • The bonus is credit for trading. It cannot be withdrawn, and withdrawing your own funds may cancel part of it.
  • Ultra Low and Zero accounts are not eligible; use a Standard or Micro account.
  • Some regions run a different promotion, so the amount you see may differ.

XM trading platforms and tools

Tools & resources 9.2 / 10

XM keeps its platform line-up simple: MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and its own XM App. If you already know MetaTrader, you will feel at home immediately. If you were hoping for cTrader or a simplified in-house web platform, XM does not offer one.

MetaTrader 4

The classic choice for forex traders. MT4 at XM supports Expert Advisors, custom indicators, one-click trading and a MultiTerminal for managing several accounts at once. It is available on Windows, Mac, web and mobile.

MetaTrader 5

MT5 adds more timeframes, more built-in indicators, Depth of Market, an economic calendar and access to direct shares. If you are starting fresh, we recommend MT5.

XM App

XM's own mobile app handles account funding, verification and trading in one place. It now includes integrated TradingView charts, an AI assistant for quick market summaries, and XM's copy trading service in supported regions. Charting depth is still lighter than MetaTrader for advanced technical traders.

Extra tools

  • Free VPS for automated trading (conditions apply)
  • Trading Central technical analysis and trade ideas
  • Economic calendar and forex calculators
  • XM Copy Trading inside the mobile app

Markets and instruments at XM

XM offers more than 1,400 instruments. That is plenty for forex, indices and popular stocks, though it trails multi-asset giants that list tens of thousands of products.

XM does not offer real bonds, listed options or interest on uninvested cash. Minimum trade size is 0.01 lots on most accounts, which makes position sizing easy for small balances.

XM deposits and withdrawals

Funding an XM account is quick and cheap. Cards and e-wallets are usually credited instantly, and XM covers most transfer fees. Withdrawals are processed internally within 24 hours on business days.

The withdrawal order rule

XM follows anti-money-laundering rules that send withdrawals back to your deposit methods in a fixed order, starting with cards, then e-wallets, then bank transfer. This is the most common cause of complaints about "slow" XM withdrawals. To avoid problems, verify your account fully before your first deposit, use payment methods in your own name, and keep your profit withdrawals on the same channel you funded with.

Education and research

Education is one of XM's real strengths. Live webinars run seven days a week in more than 20 languages, and the XM Live sessions let you watch professional traders analyse the market in real time. There are also video tutorials, podcasts, platform guides and a daily research portal with technical and fundamental analysis.

XM runs live webinars and trading sessions in more than 20 languages.

What is missing is a structured course path with quizzes and progress tracking. Beginners get a lot of good material, but they need to organise it themselves.

Customer support

Customer support 9.6 / 10

XM's support is among the best we have tested. You can reach the team through live chat, email, phone, WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber and Line, in about 30 languages. Support runs around the clock on weekdays with extended weekend hours. In our tests, live chat answered in under two minutes and gave clear, accurate answers about account types and leverage changes.

Email replies took a few hours but were detailed and included step-by-step instructions. The only real gap is the lack of a call-back service and local phone lines in some countries.

XM awards and recognition

XM collects industry awards every year, mostly for customer service and regional performance. Awards are a useful signal of reputation, but weigh them alongside regulation and real trading costs.
